5 things bloggers won’t tell you

Bloggers, lifestyle influencers, Instagram models whatever you may call it, it’s a lifestyle that has been on the rise. From picture-perfect moments to tidy blog posts we are told so often that not everything we see on a screen is a reality. Or is it?

I got into the world of “lifestyle influencing” professionally just over a year ago. I was fascinated that you could be your own #girlboss online and start creating a life you wanted while being able to hopefully motivate and inspire others. What I thought was just posting pretty pictures, turned out to be a whirlwind of confusion as I learned that it’s a business game being able to market yourself online.

Here are 5 things bloggers won’t tell you.

1. It takes money

I didn’t realize how much money had to be invested into the blogging world. I grew up having to work in order to have things that I wanted. My first job made it possible so I could have a car (put gas in it) and get myself to and from college. Long story short, I had to put A LOT of time into working in order to save up so I could build myself a platform to work with. From website domains, graphic designers, and ambassador programs I had to get my start by putting in some money.

2. It takes time

Going hand-in-hand with the money, nobody really tells you how much time you spend on your social media platforms and sites until you really get into it. Working full-time I am still putting in at least three hours a day on my blog and social media sites. I often read that after one month of blogging people are able to quit their jobs and focus on their blogs. That isn’t always the case, it takes time. Time to build everything up and time for posts to gain traction. As much as I wish everything was overnight, the truth is it’s time-consuming!

3. Marketing Marketing Marketing

Ever heard the phrase “it’s who you know, not what you know?” that phrase became a reality when I started to blog. Blogging is all about how you market yourself, you could write a Pulitzer prize winner but if you can’t market it nobody would ever know! Social media has played a HUGE part is being able to market my blog and my brand, but even then it takes time learning each algorithm and networking with the right people.

4. Networking

Networking with people in your field is how many bloggers get traction, it’s also something I love about the community. Whenever possible always find the time to network and build relationships with those similar to you, you never know who might pick up your work and get you the recognition you deserve.

5. You will make mistakes

I’m a perfectionist, and I know so many others can relate. If something doesn’t go right the first time frustration and despair can often set in. I’m still learning how to blog and market myself the way I want, I didn’t get it right the 5th time and I know I will continue to make mistakes and that’s okay. I’m learning that it’s okay to make mistakes, after all, how would we know what to do better next time? Blogging is a learning process, and you’ll learn new things each day.

I hope this gave you some insight on what really goes on behind the pretty pictures. Blogging is a constant learning curve and not everything is perfect all the time. This isn’t supposed to discourage anyone from their blogging dreams but giving more insight into what really goes on. Keep inspiring others and happy blogging!

This post is great. I’m so glad i’m not alone. Some people don’t realise how much time, energy and love goes into blogging.

So true! I feel like they make it look like it’s something everyone could do if they just tried a little harder, but there is a level of capital required both in time and money. Your honesty about this reality of blogging is much appreciated!
