How to become an influencer in today’s day and age. To start I guess we should define what an influencer is. If you look up the standard definition of an influencer on dictionary.com
an influencer is a person who has the power to influence many people, as through social media or traditional media.
Today being an influencer usually means you impact people over social media (as told in our definition). You see influencers everywhere, from social media to concerts. But exactly how does one become an influencer?
While I am still learning the ropes myself, I thought I would share a few tips and tricks I have learned in the social-media-influencing world.
Fake it till you make it
If there is one thing I have gathered from becoming an influencer it’s the saying fake it till you make it. Now, this shouldn’t be confused with “being fake”. What I mean is start to act like you know what you are doing. I know easier said than done, but start presenting yourself in the niche you want to market.
For example, if you want to be a fashion influencer start presenting yourself in that matter! Post pictures and themes related to fashion, and reach out to those in the fashion world.

Keep in mind that nothing will happen overnight! It takes persistence, networking, and content. But if you start to present yourself in your niche people will start coming to you for that thing.
Follow the leader
This one can be a bit surprising to some people, but the best way to become an influencer is to see what other influencers and doing and mimic after them. See what kind of content, captions, and filters they are using to draw in their audiences. Are they engaging with their followers? What brands are they working with?
I’m a very visual learner so when I started out I know I often looked up to see what others were doing and started to mimic those influencers and incorporate it into my own branding. Of course, you don’t want to COPY exactly what one person is doing, after all, you want people to come to you for who YOU are. If you do want to copy or replicate an exact photo or idea always reach out to the influencer or their team to get permission!
Content is key
Following may be king, but the content is queen. Have quality engaging content is the best thing you can do for your influencer brand. Whatever your niche may be, as an influencer you want to post content relevant to your brand. While posting pictures of what you had for breakfast may seem cute at the time unless you are a food blogger it probably isn’t relevant to your feed and brand.
Another tip is keeping your feed consistent with the type of filters and editing on the pictures. This can be done a variety of ways but my favorite ways to edit pictures are VSCO and Adobe Lightroom. This helps so that my feed is consistent with coloring as well as my branding.
Have a proposal ready
Otherwise known as a media kit. When brands reach out to you, they want to know what you can offer them and why they should work with you. While numbers may play a factor, being able to write up a good proposal about yourself as an influencer is a key to letting businesses know you are the real deal. Start asking yourself what do YOU have to offer as an influencer and why should people work with you? These ideas may change over time as you grow as a brand, but you should always have a plan ready-to-go.
Nothing happens overnight. While some people may get lucky in the influencing department it takes lots of time and energy to build yourself as an influencer. From editing, finding content, blogging, reaching out to companies, and writing proposals, being an influencer takes time. Don’t get frustrated if something doesn’t work the first time, I know I tried several theme and picture options before I found one I liked and got me engagement.
Overall have fun! Find niches and markets you enjoy and don’t sell yourself short for something you don’t like. Stay true you and your brand and know the right products and businesses will come your way!
