Network, it’s the foundation of just about anything you do in life. From finding a job, new friends, or even a business opportunity growing your circle is never a bad option.
Building a network these days can be overwhelming and hard to manage especially with social media… but have no fear I’ve broken down the best ways to build your network in three easy steps!
We cannot deny the power that social media has given us. At the click of a button, we can see places across the world and interact with people from coast to coast. Building my network on social media has opened doors I didn’t even know was imaginable!
How did I do it? I reached out! You would be surprised at what a simple message can do. Do you like the way someone’s Instagram looks? Tell them! Did you like that blog article or picture? Let them now! I have created so many networking doors just by simply giving a compliment.
Here are a few ways you can reach out via social media:
- Leaving a compliment
- Asking questions and initiating a conversation via messenger or comment
- Follow up information such as “where did you get this outfit”, or “can I know more?”
Initiating a conversation can instantly lead to opportunities you didn’t know where possible. I’ve met some of my best friends through social media, and have gotten some sweet job offers as well.
While social media is great, meeting people organically can do wonders as well. The best way to find events that would benefit you is finding your niche (cooking, acting, blogging etc) and finding events tailored to that niche. For instance, I enjoy acting, so I often go to events pertaining to the acting community (open houses, date nights, script reads). From there I meet people in my same niche and enjoy that community and it takes off from there! As a follow-up, I always exchange contact information with those I meet so we can keep in contact and be added to one another’s network.
The best way to find events near you:
- Facebook calendar (you can get down to the specifics)
- Community calendars
- Social media ads
- Word of mouth (you never know what you may hear in a coffee shop!)
Talking to strangers
Oh no, stranger danger… it’s everything your mother warned you about as a kid. Have no fear though, striking up conversations with people you meet can often lead to networking opportunities
(Disclaimer this isn’t saying you should put yourself in dangerous situations, be careful and mindful to those you talk too and always put your safety first.)
Talking to those around me whether it’s in line at the store or next to me in a coffee shop has given me some amazing networking opportunities. Often times we find ourselves looking at our screens as we walk place to place, but you would be surprised what happens when you interact with your surroundings instead. Next time you are in line at the store strike up a conversation with those around you, you never know who made need your talents!
